Outcome/Objective:
Effectively develop, refine, and deploy Salvus detection technology devices and supporting hardware.
Summary:
The Product Development Engineer will function as part of the Salvus team to meet the goals of Salvus plans and projects. They are responsible for safely developing and refining pilot and commercial products for use in field applications using Salvus interferometric detection technology, software, and other hardware. They must be able to develop and utilize world class skills to troubleshoot and fix problems, source raw materials for experiments, and help write functional protocols with team and supervisory input. We are looking for an energetic self-starter who can work with little direction and thrive in a dynamic environment. This role involves overseeing the hardware aspects of our handheld detection device, transitioning our minimum viable product to mass manufacturing. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in designing, prototyping, and optimizing the device, with a strong background in CAD or SolidWorks, optics, laser technology, waveguiding, and microfluidics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other Duties may be assigned.
- Lead the design and development of the hardware components of the handheld detection device.
- Oversee the entire hardware product lifecycle, from prototyping to mass production.
- Design and prototype device components using CAD or SolidWorks.
- Utilize injection molding, 3D printing, and machining techniques to create device parts.
- Find, evaluate, and onboard suppliers for component manufacturing.
- Integrate and fine-tune the laser and camera components for accurate chemical and biological detection.
- Apply microfluidics knowledge to design and optimize fluidic systems within the device.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure product quality and functionality.
- Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve the device.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering field.
- Proven experience in designing and developing hardware for complex devices.
- Proficiency in CAD or SolidWorks.
- Strong background in optics, laser technology, waveguiding, and microfluidics.
- Experience in prototyping, injection molding, 3D printing, and machining.
- Demonstrated ability to take a product from concept to mass production.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the development of analytical or detection devices.
- Knowledge of interferometric sensing technologies.
- Experience in MATLAB
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the designated supervisor or manager.
